Below are some notes from his foster home:
Highway, an approximately 2-year-old neutered cattle dog mix, spent over three months living by his wits in the bushes along the side of Highway 1 in Santa Cruz. Animal shelter staff went out over 80 times attempting to catch him and the Highway 1 was closed 7 or 8 times for him. He was finally captured at the end of March. After he had been in the shelter for about a month, he went to a foster home. He has come a long way in the 3 months in foster care but he is still shy with new people. He has never met a dog he has not wanted to play with. He blossoms around his canine cousins. He currently lives with 3 dogs and a cat. They will often all be found lounging on the futon together. Despite Highway's nervousness around unfamiliar humans, he has never shown an ounce of aggression. He sleeps on the bed at night and loves being touched.
Highway has been housetrained since the beginning. He is currently in a training class and is advancing rapidly. He also loves riding in the car. He would do best in a home where there are people around a lot and at least one other dog. Cats are fine. He needs daily heavy exercise, preferably off leash for the aerobic effect. A jogger would be the perfect match for him. Highway is charming, a project, a happy dog who is worth the effort to socialize. He has a beautiful spirit and an amazing history.
