Heather’s Pet Food Bank regularly distributes over 7,000 pounds of food a month to economically challenged and senior pet owners. With the economy in a recession, this special program is helping many families cope with enormously difficult times. Ensuring that our community's companion animals never go hungry is one of the most basic, and most critical, aspects of animal welfare.
The SPCA works with Second Harvest Food Bank, the Homeless Persons Health Project at Harvey West Park and local feed stores in collecting and distributing pet food and supplies. Heather's Pet Food Bank was named after the many generous donations received in memory of Heather Zir, a Santa Cruz resident and lifelong animal lover.
