The Santa Cruz SPCA has an active humane education program that reaches thousands of Pre-K through 12th grade students in Santa Cruz County each year. We currently offer nine different interactive presentations that focus on the humane treatment of animals, both domestic and wild, as well as the environment.

Primary and Middle School

Pet Care 101

Students are read a short story about a shelter dog and are then asked to share what they think an animal's needs are. These “needs” are placed on a felt board for visual impact and then we discuss how these needs compare to the needs of humans.

For K-3rd grade -

Language arts, Science, Social Science

Animal Issues


Explores the many different hidden interactions we have with animals in our society.  Students will be asked to consider their opinions on such topics as the use of animals for food, clothing, science, and entertainment. 

For 5th-12th grade - Language Arts, Science, History & Social Science


Too Much of a Good Thing

Emphasizes the importance of spaying and neutering companion animals.  The kids will participate in an activity to help illustrate the problem of pet overpopulation.

For 3rd-8th grade - Math, Language arts, Social Science


Ocean Kin


Focuses on the marine mammals of the Monterey Bay and how we can live harmoniously with them and respect their habitat.

For 3rd-8th grade - Science, Language Arts, History & Social Science


Web of Life


Discusses how all living things are connected and emphasizes that everything we do has an impact on the other creatures on the planet.  The presentation includes some information about local endangered species.

Animals Have Feelings Too


Discusses how animals and people share similar feelings and explores this implication on responsible animal care.

Our Wild Neighbors


Includes a felt board activity that introduces young children to the challenges of living harmoniously with wild animals in the city.


For Pre-K-2nd grade - Language Arts, Science


Play it Safe


Discusses dog behavior and how to avoid situations that may result in a dog bite.  A dog will be brought to the classroom so we can do some safe introduction.

For Pre-K–8th - Language Arts, Physical Education, Science, Social Science


Careers with Animals


Discusses the different job opportunities working with or for animals.  Gives information about education and requirements as well as salary expectations.

Dog fighting and the Community


Students will see a short HSUS video about the life of a fighting dog and will discuss how the animals basic needs are not met. We will also talk about the laws surrounding dog fighting and what participants or even bystanders can lose.
